By comprehensively analyzing the Eisei Bunko Hosokawa Clan document collection's massive amount of Memoranda files, which detail the activities of the local government administration, as well as the Zaimachi records of the evaluations and commendations of citizens and village officials, we have been able to shed light on the full picture of the administration system that was employed in the early-modern era of the Kumamoto Domain. Furthermore, by examining how these systems and the region itself modernized with the passage of time, we can clarify the preconditions for the evolution of modern society.
This ambitious collection of writings depicts the regional society in the Kumamoto Domain, taking full account of its positive impacts and issues of this influential western feudal state.
