Cambridge-Kumamoto-Eisei Bunko Joint Workshop on Japanese Historical Sources Held

On June 26, 2026, the "Joint Workshop on Japanese Historical Sources and Cultural Resources," was held at the University of Cambridge. Co-organized by the University of Cambridge and Kumamoto University, the event marks a significant step in the growing partnership between the two institutions."  

In his opening remarks, Vice President Masato Miyake of Kumamoto University expressed his gratitude to the faculty and staff of Cambridge's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies for their collaborative efforts. Noting that Kumamoto University has previously hosted a visiting researcher from the same faculty, he expressed his hope to further deepening this partnership. Acknowledging the day's extreme heat, Vice President Miyake expressed his hope that the subsequent academic discussions would be equally intense and spirited.

The presentations featured a wide array of research on Japanese history and cultural preservation:

• Professor Mikael S. Adolphson (University of Cambridge) opened the session by highliting the significance of examining Japanese history from an international perspective.
• Mr. Morimitsu Hosokawa, President of The Eisei Bunko Foundation, provided insights into the history of the collection and expressed his hope that these vital cultural resources would continue to contribute to historical research and be preserved for future generations.
• Professor Tsuguharu Inaba (Kumamoto University) provided an overview of the Hosokawa Family Documents (over 58,000 items) and the Matsui Family Documents (36,000 items). He also showcased recent findings on regional daimyo history and the use of the revolutionary AI-OCR tool "Fuminoha" to decode archival materials.
• Ms. Noriko Goto (Kumamoto University), a research fellow, presented her research on 17th-century wine production in Japan.

Following a presentation by Dr. Andrew Fischer (University of Cambridge) on his research experiences at Kumamoto University, the participants engaged in a lively discussion regarding research methodologies, Digital Humanities, and the potential for future student exchanges and joint research.

The event concluded with a networking session, reinforcing the shared goal of broadening the scope of Japanese studies in the UK and fostering the next generation of researchers. This workshop served as a "kick-off" for sustained academic collaboration, focusing on the Eisei Bunko (Hosokawa Family) Collection, which gained international prominence following the national designation of 9,346 items as Important Cultural Properties in 2025. The relationships strengthened and the ideas generated through this dialogue have laid a foundation for future collaboration, positioning both institutions to advance new frontiers in historical research.

ケンブリッジ大学・熊本大学・永青文庫 合同ワークショップを開催

2026年6月26日、英国ケンブリッジ大学において「日本史文化資料・合同ワークショップ」が開催されました。本イベントは、ケンブリッジ大学と熊本大学の連携をさらに深める重要な一歩となりました。 

開会にあたり、熊本大学の三宅雅人副学長は、ケンブリッジ大学アジア・中東学部の方々の多大なる協力に謝意を表しました。また、これまで同学部からの客員研究員受け入れを通じて培ってきた交流実績に触れ、今後さらに両校の連携を強固なものにしたいと期待を寄せました。記録的な猛暑の中での開催となりましたが、三宅副学長は「この暑さに負けないくらい、熱い議論が交わされることを願っています」と述べ、会場の期待を高めました。 

ワークショップでは、日本史研究や文化資料の保存・活用について多角的な発表が行われました。

• Mikael S. Adolphson教授（ケンブリッジ大学）：日本国外から日本史を研究することの重要性と意義について講じました。
• 細川護光理事長（公益財団法人永青文庫財団）：コレクションの沿革を紹介し、貴重な文化資源が将来にわたり歴史研究に寄与し、次世代へ継承されていくことへの願いを述べました。
• 稲葉継陽教授（熊本大学）：細川家文書（58,000点超）および松井家文書（36,000点）の概要を報告。さらに、大名家史研究における新たな知見や、AIくずし字認識技術「ふみのは」を活用した資料解読の最新事例を紹介しました。
• 後藤典子特別研究員（熊本大学）：17世紀初期の日本におけるぶどう酒醸造文化に関する研究成果を発表しました。 

続くセッションでは、ケンブリッジ大学のAndrew Fischer氏が熊本大学での自身の研究体験を紹介。その後、研究手法やデジタル・ヒューマニティーズの可能性、さらに今後の学生交流や共同研究のあり方について、活発な意見交換が行われました。 

本ワークショップは、2025年に新たに9,346点が国の重要文化財に指定され、国際的な注目を集める「永青文庫」資料を核とした、中長期的な学術連携の「キックオフ」として開催されました。閉会後のネットワーキングセッションでは、参加者らが研究の枠を超えて語り合い、日英における日本研究の深化と次世代の若手研究者を育成するという共通の使命を再確認しました。今回の対話を通じて芽生えた共同研究の萌芽と強固なネットワークは、今後、両大学が協力して日本史研究の新たな地平を切り拓いていくための揺るぎない礎となることが期待されます。議論を次なる共同研究へと確実に繋げていくことの重要性を確認し、本イベントは盛況のうちに幕を閉じました。
